Village at Market Creek Receives High Development Rating

The Village at Market Creek has become only the third redevelopment project in the country to earn the Silver designation under the LEED Neighborhood Development rating system. “LEED for Neighborhood Development certification provides independent, third party verification that a development’s location and design meet high standards of environmentally responsible, sustainable development,” said Scot Horst, senior vice president of LEED at the United States Green Building Council. “It is my sincere hope that this project serves as a model for sustainable design in communities across the country.” The Village plan is to transform up to 84 contiguous acres of blighted properties into a vibrant cultural “village” that includes residential, commercial, and recreational spaces integrated around the Euclid transit hub. The plan includes the creation of 1,000 affordable homes, 2,000 jobs and 250 new businesses, 5,500 linear feet of restored wetlands and 1.6 million square feet of new construction.

Local students combat school violence

Attendees at “Silence is Worse Than Violence,” a forum that took place Friday at the Jacobs Center in San Diego, participate in a dance. / Photo by Earnie Grafton * U-T

Even before waves of brutal school violence crashed on communities in Ohio and Illinois last week, leaving four students dead, youngsters in San Diego were helping to organize events to increase the peace locally.

They said the latest tragedies gave their gatherings a graver significance.

Friday night, hundreds of teenagers and adults held a youth town hall meeting in Lincoln Park titled “Silence is Worse Than Violence.”

A day later, three dozen children from San Diego and their parents flew to Washington, D.C., to join other students from around the country. They plan to recite a “peace pledge” on the floor of Congress on Monday. One of them will hand a copy of the pledge to the Ohio congressman whose district includes the school where a 17-year-old shot and killed three fellow students on Feb. 27.

“I hate how all these high schools just seem unprotected and scary to be in,” said Carlsbad High School senior Natalie Weldon, a trip participant. “High school should
be a safe place and a happy place and a peaceful one.”

Monday also is the 11th anniversary of one of San Diego County’s worst cases of school violence — the 2001 Santana High School shootings, which left two people dead and 13 others injured in Santee. It’s also when closing legal arguments will begin in the case of
a man accused of shooting two little girls at a Carlsbad elementary school in 2010.

Sherehe Hollins helped organize Friday’s forum at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center, where she works as program manager for civic and cultural engagement. She said calls to action will always follow tragedy.

“It’s extremely unfortunate and tragic what’s been happening,” said Hollins, 31.
“At the same time, it’s a reminder why we need to have these courageous and oftentimes uncomfortable conversations about what’s happening in our communities.”

Hollins was an advocate for students at Lincoln High School during the 2007-2008 school year, when she arranged presentations and exhibits on Africa’s legacy in Mexico and other subjects to help alleviate tensions between black and Latino students. She said giving youths a voice deters violence.

“While I would love to say, ‘Yeah, we can get rid of it entirely,’ I think there will always
be those moments of tragedy,” she added.

Those moments seem to be fewer and further between in recent years.

A February report by the U.S. departments of Education and Justice lists 33 school-related violent deaths in the 2009-2010 school year. That’s the lowest figure since such data was first collected in 1992, and it’s a continuation of a three-year downward trend.

There were 17 homicides and one suicide of students ages 5-18 in that most recent year. That’s fewer homicides than any year since 2001-2002 and fewer suicides since
1996-1997, though numbers have varied widely from year to year.

Michael Brunker, executive director of the Jackie Robinson YMCA in southeastern
San Diego, helped promote Friday’s youth forum in the Oak Park neighborhood.

“These are young adults bringing this together. That’s what I’m really proud of,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that are working hard on this because the young folks are the solution. The power of youth is amazing.”

The forum featured nationally known speaker Kevin Powell — a cast mate from the first season of MTV’s “The Real World” who often speaks out against violence — and a panel of local students united in beating back everything from bullying to gang activity.

“Our community needs to stop trying to fight each other,” said panelist Bridgette Castillo, 17, a junior at Lincoln High School in Lincoln Park.

Unity also was the unifying theme for the group of San Diego County students now in the nation’s capital. Their trip was organized by the Carlsbad-based nonprofit Kids for Peace, which champions community service and environmental stewardship.

In all, 63 students from the organization’s chapters nationwide are in Washington, D.C.,
to rally at the Lincoln Memorial and elsewhere, Kids for Peace cofounder and executive director Jill McManigal said.

The traveling students are mostly elementary school age — and more familiar with bullying than harsher violence — so the topics they and the adults around them tackle will differ from those discussed at Friday’s forum.

“We definitely don’t ever want to scare our kids,” McManigal said. “We want to maintain their innocence. But these kids are savvy and when they have an awareness of something, they want to be part of a positive solution.”

In that, the two San Diego efforts are alike.

“Hope is so important because when we hear these dark things happening, it’s easy just to give up,” McManigal said. “This will serve as an inspiration for people to know that there’s good stuff going on.”

Local Libraries to Display Traveling Exhibits

Forward to Your Friends and Family!

Local Libraries to Display Traveling Exhibits

Escondido, CA - The San Diego Archaeological Center is excited to promote five exhibit installations at local branch libraries and San Diego City Hall lobby. The history of San Diego County has been well-documented in books. However, artifacts recovered from archaeological sites can reveal a more personal account of the past. The everyday objects that pass through our hands, used and then discarded, capture significant details not often noted in history books.

These exhibits recount the everyday lives in American history as lived by San Diegans and recorded by the artifacts they left behind. This is a great opportunity to tour City libraries and view the Center’s traveling exhibits. There’s so much to learn about our city’s rich cultural heritage!

February 17-29, 2012- Skyline Hills Branch Library- “The Legendary Life of Nate Harrison”
March 1-31, 2012- Oceanside Public Library- “Celebrate Women’s History Month”
March 1-31, 2012- Oak Park Branch Library- “A Day in the Life”
April 1-May 21, 2012- Tierra Santa Branch Library- “Rose Canyon, a Walk through Time”
May 1-31, 2012- San Diego City Hall Lobby- “Moments in Time”

What will we leave behind for future archaeologists to find that will tell of our experiences today?

The San Diego Archaeological Center was created in 1993 to provide an archaeological curation facility for the San Diego Region. The Center was the first nonprofit organization in the nation dedicated solely to curating and sharing archaeological collections with the public. The Center’s new entryway features native plant landscaping designed to promote conservation, an outdoor exhibit and seating areas.
The Mission of the San Diego Archaeological Center is to preserve archaeological collections and promote their educational, scientific and cultural use to benefit a diverse public.

The Status and Struggle of Black Farmers

In Southeastern San Diego, a food desert, the People’s Produce Farmers Market will host an African American History Month event featuring displays and discussion on the Status and Struggle of the Black Farmer. Did you know?

  • In 1910, nearly one million Black farmers in the U.S. owned a total of 15 million acres; by 1969 they held only 6 million acres.
  • In 1920, Blacks owned 14% of the nation’s farms; today, there are only 18,000 black farmers, representing less than 1% of all farms.
  • In 2011, a federal judge ruled that tens of thousands of African American and Native American farmers who suffered racial discrimination by the U.S. Agriculture Department in the 1980s and ’90s could start getting compensation from a $1.25 billion settlement.

San Diego County is home to the largest number of small farms in the nation – 6687, yet only 27 of these farm operators are African American according to the 2007 Agriculture Census Report.

The current food system is failing African Americans as evidenced by the high rates of chronic disease/health disparities, the proliferation of food deserts and the growing impetus to develop urban agriculture in communities of color.

Since the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 to today, African-Americans have fought to acquire and maintain land to produce food, and have encountered incredible obstacles along the way.

There is clearly a connection between food access, food production, health, and poverty, which needs to be examined as we engage in building a sustainable food system that is inclusive and responsive to the needs and strengths of all eaters.

Locally, People’s Produce Project is a pioneer in urban agriculture, with a farmers market, food preparation classes, community garden projects created and operated by residents, and involvement in the food justice movement and city-wide advocacy efforts to make San Diego more supportive of food sovereignty for all.

At the leadership of People’s Produce Project are African Americans who are committed to connecting Southeastern San Diego to the global food movement; while creating a community-based food system which builds on the assets and legacies of this geographical defined space.

Come to the People’s Produce Farmers Market, located at 4981 Market Street, on Friday, February 17, 2012 2p – 6p to learn and share more facts and figures on African Americans and Agriculture. The program will include speakers, cultural expressions, good food and more. There will be opportunities to get involved in this effort.

The People’s Produce Farmers Market is a part of Healthy Works, a county-wide initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the County of San Diego; and a part of the County’s “Live Well, San Diego! Building Better Health” initiative, a 10-year vision for healthy communities. Additionally the farmers market is supported by a grant from the Neighborhood Unity Foundation.
