KAMP, KCS, and FILAMEDA will be partnering with several community organizations to contribute to the success of this event. FILAMEDA will be honoring their 2012 scholarship recipients who have exhibited great dedication to their community and academics.
Also, present will be Kalusugan Community Services who is the proud fiscal sponsor of this event.

“…It [FilGrad] fosters a lot of good things for our community and I think it needs to keep going,” Christian Rodriguez, HS FilGrad Graduate c/o 2010.

Local Libraries to Display Traveling Exhibits

Forward to Your Friends and Family!

Local Libraries to Display Traveling Exhibits

Escondido, CA - The San Diego Archaeological Center is excited to promote five exhibit installations at local branch libraries and San Diego City Hall lobby. The history of San Diego County has been well-documented in books. However, artifacts recovered from archaeological sites can reveal a more personal account of the past. The everyday objects that pass through our hands, used and then discarded, capture significant details not often noted in history books.

These exhibits recount the everyday lives in American history as lived by San Diegans and recorded by the artifacts they left behind. This is a great opportunity to tour City libraries and view the Center’s traveling exhibits. There’s so much to learn about our city’s rich cultural heritage!

February 17-29, 2012- Skyline Hills Branch Library- “The Legendary Life of Nate Harrison”
March 1-31, 2012- Oceanside Public Library- “Celebrate Women’s History Month”
March 1-31, 2012- Oak Park Branch Library- “A Day in the Life”
April 1-May 21, 2012- Tierra Santa Branch Library- “Rose Canyon, a Walk through Time”
May 1-31, 2012- San Diego City Hall Lobby- “Moments in Time”

What will we leave behind for future archaeologists to find that will tell of our experiences today?

Please contact each site for operating hours and directions.

Toy Drive For Underprivileged Children Honors Fallen SDPD Officer

San diego – On Thursday, December 15, The San Diego Police Department Southeastern Division (SDPD) and the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (JCNI) partnered for the 3rd Annual Jerry Griffen Toy Drive to distribute toys for underprivileged children in the southeastern San Diego community.  The drive, assisted by Toys for Tots, served over 60 families, which included over 200 children. The party was held at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center in southeastern San Diego where over 1,000 toys, ranging from bicycles to iPods, were handed out. The event included lunch for the children and their families, a visit from Santa, and a few hours of entertainment.

“What made this such a fantastic event was the southeastern community stepping up to help their own,” said event chairman Officer Tyler Deyling. “Everything was donated by local vendors from the food to the space.”

“With the tough economy, it was a rough start,” said Duane Phillips from JCNI, “but everything fell into place, thanks to community support and Officer Deyling’s hard work.”

The Jerry Griffen Toy Drive is in memory of a fallen San Diego Police Motor Officer who was killed in the line of duty.  In his honor, each police division in San Diego provides underprivileged children within their community toys during the holiday season.  The Southeastern Division has sought to provide toys to as many children as possible, as well as have the opportunity to introduce the children and families to the police officers who serve their community.

Free Blood Lead Testing for Children

Protect Your Children From Lead

Did You Know?

  • Exposure to lead-based paint can be harmful to children and adults;
  • 75% of the homes built before 1979 contain some lead-based paint;
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 310,000 children have blood-lead levels above safe limits.

The Dangers of Lead
Lead-based paint is a major source of lead poisoning for children and can affect adults. Even low levels of lead in children can result in stunted mental and physical development, learning disorders, and behavior problems. Lead can even cause abnormal fetal development in pregnant women.

You might have lead in and around your home without knowing it because you cannot see, taste or smell lead. Lead is most commonly found on exterior-painted surfaces, interior woodwork, doors, and windows. The greatest threat is breathing or ingesting dust from lead-based paint as it chips or deteriorates over time.

Blood Testing
La Maestra Community Health Center conducts the blood tests using a non-invasive Lead Care II blood analyzer that was purchased by the Housing Commission under a program grant in 2008.

Test results are immediate – within three minutes. If a child tests positive, families will be referred for further medical evaluation. In addition, families are provided with information on how to eliminate lead hazards, offered a free home inspection, and encouraged to sign-up for the “Home Safe Home” Program.

Bring your children or grandchildren under the age of six for a blood test for the presence of lead.

Mo'olelo - Yellow Face 2010-10

It’s the closing weekend of Mo‘olelo Performing Arts Company‘s production of Yellow Face, written by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang.

A Pulitzer-prize finalist, Yellow Face takes a comedic and contemplative look at race through three main characters: a renowned Asian American playwright, the white actor who is mistakenly cast to play the Asian lead in his play, and the playwright’s father. The title refers to the practice of casting of Caucasian actors as Asian characters, whose looks were often altered through makeup to appear more Asian.

Performances take place in downtown San Diego at the Tenth Avenue Theatre and tickets can be purchased online at Mo‘olelo’s website. Through the company’s greening initiative, if you bring proof of carpooling, driving a hybrid, bicycling, or taking public transit to the show, Mo‘olelo will email you a $5-off coupon for your next Mo‘olelo production. How cool is that?

For more information, visit Mo‘olelo online or call (619) 342-7395.

So, technically, this event takes place on a Monday night, but what better time to plan for it than now? Award-winning jazz guitarist, José Molina Serrano, will be accompanied by a group of talented friends at Humphrey’s Backstage Live to benefit Common Ground Theatre.

This southeastern San Diego nonprofit also organizes a Youth Academy to provide mentoring and practical theater experience for youth from ages 7 – 17.

This is a 21+ show. Tickets are $50; not only are they tax-deductible, but you can bring a friend for free.
